This is Baby Lyra. She was born on June 21st 2016 at 11:15pm. Her weight was 8lb 4oz and she was 20" long. Her newborn session was on July 7th, but it almost didn't happen. Here's why.
I had done Mom's maternity session a couple of months earlier and she told me how excited she was about having her first baby girl and that she wanted to book a newborn session. I told her I would love to do it and that she should call me as soon as the baby was born.
Baby Lyra is Born!
Time went by and I learnt that Lyra was born two days before she was due. I sent both Mom and Dad congratulations, but they didn't mention anything about the session so I thought they have changed their minds.
To Book or Not to Book
Almost two weeks after Lyra's birth, I received an email from Mom saying that she really wanted me to take Lyra's pictures, but that Dad wasn't convinced. He wasn't a photo kind of guy. She told me he wasn't into newborn photos and didn't want to commit to a big pricy digital package. She was frustrated, since her baby was growing fast and she didn't want to miss the precious newborn stage, but she wanted her husband to be on board too. I told her that they could pay only the session fee and if they didn't like the photos, they didn't have to buy anything. Of course, I knew that wasn't going to be the case! ;) Dad was comfortable with the decision and we scheduled the newborn session right away.
The day of the session, both parents were curious and excited when I arrived with my never ending stash of props and outfits. Every time I changed baby Lyra's pose, I could hear them go "Awwwwh, so cute!". We incorporated sentimental items to the session, like a hat and a teddy bear knitted just for her. Lyra rocked her session and slept almost the entire time. Once the session was over, Mom was super happy and couldn't wait to see the pictures.
When I started posting sneak peaks, Mom texted me saying they were both loving the photos! Dad even reposted and shared them on social media. When the third sneak peak went out, I got a text saying: "Ok, he just said: 'I guess we are buying a package!'" I gave them their products two weeks later, and we were still there at the coffee house and Dad had already shared some pictures from the digital album app with his family. This made me so happy! He still isn't a photo kind of guy, but I could see that he was super happy with his baby's pictures, and that he was glad they booked their session with me.
A Decision that will Last a Lifetime
I wanted to share this story because I know that for some people taking the decision to have a photography session is a tough one. Some parents are not sure that they want to do it. Others might think it's money thrown down the drain. Your baby will be this small for a very short period of time. Before you know it they will become big kids running at the park, and then you'll want to remember how tiny and precious they were. Don't let this few days slip away, let me capture these moments for you!
Thanks to baby Lyra's Mom and Dad for letting me share their story! ;)
