Fun Ways To Announce Your Baby’s Gender

For many parents, the most exciting day of their pregnancy is the ultrasound appointment when they find out their baby’s gender. I’ve heard so many parents say that the more they learn about their baby, including imaging and knowing the baby’s gender, the more bonded they feel to that little being inside.

Fun, Creative, And Special Ways To Reveal Your Baby’s Gender

Once you know, it makes sense you want to share that information with your inner circle. For some, this may be a more intimate one-on-one revelation over a meal; for others, it might be Day 1 of Gender Reveal Party Planning.

TLC NOTE:  I highly recommend ensuring you’ve adjusted to your baby’s gender before planning a big party. Some parents experience gender disappointment, and it can take a while to readjust. There’s plenty of time to make your announcements, so take your time and wait until you’re ready.

Regardless of your route, there is a seemingly infinite list of ideas for announcing your news to family and friends. Here are some of the most fun, creative, and special gender reveal ideas.

The Big Reveals: Revealing Baby’s Gender To A Crowd

We’ll start by providing ideas for revealing a baby’s gender to a big crowd. Gender reveal parties are a common way to do this, but some parents-to-be like tacking on a gender announcement while attending another family event, like a BBQ, holiday celebration, or family reunion.

I recommend checking with a host(ess) before piggybacking on another event to ensure nobody feels like anyone’s spotlight is dimmed.

The confetti-filled balloon

One of the simplest but fun ways to announce whether your baby is a boy or a girl is to have a party store fill a large, dark-colored balloon (like black, navy, or eggplant) with colored confetti representing the baby’s gender. When it’s time to make the announcement, the *Pop!* and the resulting explosion of colorful confetti will make the crowd go wild.

Fill a piñata with gender-colored candy

This is like the balloon idea but uses a piñata instead. You can purchase a piñata of any type - including one of the specific gender reveal options, and then fill it with candies that represent your baby’s gender. This makes the process more interactive since guests get to harness their inner child while whacking on the piñata, and then the cascade of gender-centric treats is deliciously edible.

Create a gender-themed playlist & dance it out

Do your friends and family like to get down on the dance floor? How about letting music (and a dance party) guide the reveal? Create a playlist with songs with “Girls” or “Boys” in the main title or chorus…and then dance out all that exciting energy.

For inspiration, Spotify already has a Gender Reveal Party playlist that keeps things neutral during the gathering, allowing you to stop the music - build suspense. Once you’ve got everyone’s attention, you can select a specific song to announce your beloved baby Boy or Girl.

Have a treasure hunt

This is fun for any gathering, but especially if many younger kids are in the mix. Organize a treasure hunt with clues and small “rewards” or “prizes”, eventually leading to the baby’s gender reveal.

A gender reveal athletic game

Do you have a family that loves to play soccer, baseball, or other sports together? The family who plays together stays together, right? Elevate your group’s athletic enthusiasm by purchasing a gender reveal ball. This is like the athletic version of a piñata, but the ball will eventually give way and explode into a gender representing color.

Gender Reveals For The One-On-One Or Smaller Crowd

Not so interested in a larger gathering? There are plenty of fun ways to announce what you’re having to individuals or smaller groups.

The after lunch/dinner fortune cookie

Invite your friends and family to a meal and throw in a few decorations made for a gender reveal party (napkins, party favors, table confetti, etc.) and then enjoy dinner at a favorite restaurant. At the end of the meal, hand out gender-reveal fortune cookies, count to three, and watch the guests delight as they open their cookies to reveal the exciting news.

Gift them their own baby must-haves and needs

Turn the tables on who’s gifting who and present loved ones with their own baby must-haves and needs

For example, feeding a baby is an amazing bonding experience and a perfect way for siblings to connect with the family’s newest addition while also helping out. Give your children their own baby bottles to use once baby comes and they’ll take pride when baby can finally use it. Similarly, grandparents will appreciate having a set of pajamas or baby clothes to keep at their house when baby visits. If they live long distances, think ahead and choose an outfit matching the approximate age of your first visit.

Schedule a special maternity photo session

So many of the gender reveal ideas are fleeting, relevant only in the moment. However, a photo lasts a lifetime and can preserve the exciting news, becoming one of the first visual images of your baby’s story and your family’s journey.

Consider scheduling a gender reveal maternity photo session, wearing a special shirt - or holding an infant outfit across your tummy - announcing the gender of the soon-to-arrive addition. This can be especially satisfying for mothers-to-be who are more introverted and don’t like to have in-person attention. You can post the final photo on social media and send framed copies to immediate loved ones (grandparents LOVE this one!)

Gender reveal candle

This is another great idea if some of your most beloved family or friends live far away or you like to meet with people one-on-one. Purchase a gender reveal candle, which reveals the gender of the baby as the wax burns down. You can make the candle pack double the punch, asking recipients to then light the candle again when they learn you’re in labor - a collective of sacred intentions to light your baby’s way into the world.

Customized t-shirt gifts

Another gift idea is to purchase gender reveal t-shirts that say something specific to the recipients' relationship to your baby. The top Line says, “I’m getting a…” and then below, there are check boxes next to:

  • Little Sister or Little Brother

  • Granddaughter or Grandson

  • Nephew or Niece

Have your loved one put on the t-shirt and close their eyes. Then, using a fabric marker, you put a check in the appropriate box. When they open their eyes, they get to know your secret.
